The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has spent months being the go-to answer whenever someone asks "what's the best gaming CPU right now?" — and after digging into its numbers and the nearly 6,000 verified Amazon reviews, it's easy to see why.

3D V-Cache makes the difference

AMD's second generation of 3D V-Cache stacks extra cache directly on top of the cores, which in practice translates into more FPS in games that lean heavily on cache — which is most current titles. With only 8 cores and 16 threads, it looks modest on paper next to chips with more cores, but in pure gaming it still beats processors with double the core count, including several Intel Core i9 models.

Who it makes sense for, and who it doesn't

If your PC is essentially a gaming machine and you're not doing heavy streaming, 3D rendering, or daily code compilation, the 9800X3D is hard to beat within AMD's lineup. If you need more cores for multithreaded productivity work instead, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D (also in our processor comparison) makes more sense despite costing considerably more.

The main catch is price: above €400, it's not an entry-level chip, and since it has no integrated graphics you'll need to budget for a dedicated GPU too. Even so, with nearly 6,000 reviews and 4.8 stars, it has one of the best combinations of volume and satisfaction in our entire processor comparison.
